New strawberries planted

Published on April 15, 2012, by in Diary.

I managed to clear, prepare and plant up the bed in two hours. The new runners are now enjoying a sunny and fertile spot. Fingers crossed for a bountiful harvest!

Grandma Jill, Grandpa Keith and Hannah managed to deadhead a lot of the daffs – another good job done.

Holiday frustrations

Published on April 14, 2012, by in Diary, Jobs-to-do.

The last couple of weeks have been a bit frustrating on the garden front. The Easter Hols have been busy and apart from watering the seedlings and plants in the greenhouse I haven’t managed to have a good session. We are still harvesting the purple sprouting broccoli which has been amazing. We started eating it around mid Jan! It looks like it’s coming to an end now as it’s a battle to stop it from flowering. Will definitely grow again for next year.

The strawberries in the greenhouse are flowering and I’m wondering if I should pollinate them as no bees have got into the greenhouse. Will have a go today with a small paintbrush.

Urgent jobs to do

  • Plant up new everlasting strawberry plants(Albion) which arrived yesterday.
  • Finish weeding veg plots and dig in compost ready for planting and sowing.
  • Sow some more seeds – flowers and veg.
  • Weed fruit cage
  • Dead head daffs
  • Plant Hannah’s violas
  • Redo and refresh pots
  • General weed
  • Feed roses and fruit trees

Verbena Bonaniensis and Heliotropes

Just got home to find my new plug plants have arrived from Mr Fothergills.

I have five verbena bonaniensis and five heliotropes to plant in the back of the herbaceous border. I need to pot them on and keep them in the greenhouse until May.

Forecast is cold tonight so will need to keep them in the house. Should cover my seedlings too.

I must not sow too early next year!

Cold weather returns

Published on April 4, 2012, by in Diary.

After the amazing unseasonal warmth of late March we have been hit with the return of really cold weather. I am worrying that I’ve sown my melon seeds too early in the greenhouse but so far the pumpkin, sweet pea and runner beans look ok. Never had a greenhouse before and looks like I’ll be learning the hard way.

Purple sprouting for sale

We’ve been having an amazing harvest of purple sprouting and Frances ended up selling a large trug full at the primary school end of term fete and the kids have made a stall outside today.

A few words about our March efforts

Published on April 2, 2012, by in Diary.

March was the first month we really ventured out and started working on the garden after some very cold weather.

Frances has been busy digging the vegetable beds and planting seeds in the greenhouse.

Tony has acquired all sorts of new tools including a chain saw, a hedge cutter, a strimmer and a petrol lawn mower (the manual one just wasn’t going to cut it!).
