A full day spent in the garden today trying to reclaim a bit of control after some really rampant growth. Loving the wild meadow look even if it is more through neglect than design!
Sun rising over a chilly Dartmoor – timelapse
A quick timelapse film taken this morning over the garden and out to a chilly Dartmoor.
Check out what looks like a shooting star near the start (right hand side).
Lots of help picking raspberries, blackcurrants and redcurrants
We’ve had a lot of help this weekend with berry picking.
First Jill and Keith very kindly brought in the latest batch of delicious raspberries. The harvest this summer has been amazing and we must have been eating them daily for the best part of a month now.
The we had a visit from the helpers from the amazing Percy’s Country Hotel and Restaurant just up the road in Virginstowe in West Devon. The team spent an afternoon picking redcurrants and blackcurrants for chef Tina Bricknell-Webb to turn into delicious treats for her guests.
When dad vs the hedge goes all wrong…
It was time once again to set about the big hedge that runs across our Devon garden separating the top lawn from the vegetable area beyond. In truth, it would have been time several weeks ago as growth has been spectacular but there is always something else that needs doing at the weekend and we were worried about birds nesting and so on.
Anyway, this weekend the sun was out and I was determined to cut it down to size. It also meant I got to use my new petrol multi-tool with hedge cutter attachment and see if it was any good (the brush cutter had already been tested and done well).
All started well but at some stage, with confidence probably starting to get the better of me, I misstepped on the ladder platform and, as the say, the rest is history…
Still, I was not to be beaten and with a little help from Henry (yes, revenge for the photo), we licked it into some kind of shape by the end of the weekend.
Now we’ve only got another five or six hedges to sort and everything will be looking properly trim.
Borders looking good in the early June sunshine
May was a pretty dreadful month here in West Devon. There was a good week somewhere near the start, but it quickly faded and by the star of June we were still lighting fires in the evening.
Despite this (or maybe because of it) the growing through the garden seems to have been pretty robust, at least judging by the lawn which seemed to transform into a jungle every time you turned your back on it.
The weather the last few days has been much better and suddenly flowers are bursting into life all over. It feels like summer and that’s always a good thing.
The bees (and butterflies) seem to be enjoying this one
I’m not sure what this plant is, but for the past few weeks it has been attracting lots of bees and butterflies – far more so than anything else in the garden (like the borage was earlier in the summer). Hopefully they’re getting what they need from it…
